Looked after children (LAC) are and young people (CYP) who have been under the continuous care of local authority for more than 24 hours. Reasons becoming looked include concerns about abuse or neglect, breakdown in family functioning, absence a suitable caregiver (for example bereavement, parental illness, separation, such as unaccompanied asylum-seeking children). Many LAC live with foster families, extended family, residential homes, but CYP can be legally 'looked after' still living their original birth independently support. Regardless circumstances, has responsibility meeting needs CYP, including dental care, usually via named social worker. The evidence available suggests that at higher risk caries pain.
